Essaouira earns most of its reputation from the medina and the beach, but the region around it is one of Morocco's most rewarding β argan forest, wild Atlantic coast, Berber villages untouched by mass tourism, and surf beaches that have drawn a global community since the 1970s. All of the day trips below are within 30km of town; most are reachable by local taxi or shared transport.
Sidi Kaouki β The Surf Beach
The most popular day trip from Essaouira. Sidi Kaouki is a wild, crescent-shaped beach 27km south of town, backed by dunes and a small Berber village with a marabout shrine. The wind blows consistently here (Essaouira is often called "Wind City of Africa") making it Morocco's premier windsurfing and kitesurfing location.
What to Do
- Surf lessons β several schools on the beach, ~250β350 MAD for a 2h lesson including board
- Windsurfing & kitesurfing β equipment rental from 200 MAD/h; best wind OctoberβApril
- Camel rides along the beach (100β150 MAD for 30 min)
- Seafood lunch at one of the beachfront shacks β fresh grilled fish, harira, mint tea
- Dune walk north from the beach toward the Marabout shrine
Getting there: Grand taxi from Essaouira (Bab Doukkala taxi stand) β 30β40 MAD/person shared, or 150β200 MAD private. Journey: 30β40 min. Return taxis pass regularly until ~6pm.
Diabat Village β Jimi Hendrix's Morocco
A 15-minute walk south of Essaouira along the beach (or a 5 MAD petit taxi ride) brings you to Diabat, the tiny village where Jimi Hendrix famously stayed in 1969. Local legend has it he wrote "Castles Made of Sand" here β though the actual provenance is disputed, the atmospheric ruins of Dar Sultan kasbah on the beach are real and genuinely haunting.
What to See
- Dar Sultan ruins β 17th-century fortified kasbah on the beach, free to explore
- Oued Ksob estuary β flamingos and wading birds at the river mouth (best dawn and dusk)
- Village itself β small artisan workshops, zero tourist pressure, genuinely local
Diabat is best combined with Sidi Kaouki β take a grand taxi south, stop at Diabat on the way back. The beach walk back to Essaouira (3km) is one of the finest coastal walks in Morocco.
Argan Cooperative Tour β Morocco's Liquid Gold
The argan tree (Argania spinosa) grows nowhere else on Earth except southwestern Morocco. The oil extracted from its kernels sells for more than olive oil and is used in everything from cooking to cosmetics. Visiting a women's argan cooperative near Essaouira is the best way to understand this remarkable tree β and buy genuine oil directly from the producers.
The Best Cooperatives
- CoopΓ©rative Marjane (15km from Essaouira on the Agadir road) β one of the oldest women's cooperatives; free demonstration, fair-trade certified. Culinary argan oil from ~80 MAD/100ml.
- Association Amal (near Tidzi, 25km south) β smaller, more intimate setting. Call ahead.
Buying tip: Cooperatives sell genuine, cold-pressed argan oil at honest prices. Roadside stalls and souk vendors often sell adulterated oil mixed with sunflower oil. If the price seems too low, it probably is. The real thing costs 200β400 MAD per 100ml for cosmetic grade, 80β120 MAD/100ml for culinary.
Argan Forest Walk
The argan woodland around Essaouira is UNESCO-listed (part of the Arganeraie Biosphere Reserve). Early mornings you may see goats sitting in the argan trees β one of Morocco's most surreal sights. The R207 road south toward Agadir passes through the heart of the forest.
Cap Sim & the Atlantic Dunes
The Cap Sim headland, 10km south of Essaouira, is a wild Atlantic promontory with crashing waves, a lighthouse, and sand dunes that march inland from the coast. It's completely undeveloped β no tourists, no facilities, just wild coast.
The approach road (partially piste) runs through argan forest. A 4x4 or mountain bike is ideal; it's also reachable by walking the beach south from Essaouira in about 2 hours each way.
Swimming warning: Cap Sim and the beaches south of Essaouira have powerful Atlantic rip currents. They are not swimming beaches. Do not enter the water unless with an experienced guide or at designated safe areas.
Haha Berber Hinterland
The Haha tribe is one of Morocco's oldest Berber groups, inhabiting the foothills east of Essaouira toward the Anti-Atlas. Their villages β adobe houses terraced on hillsides, ancient olive groves, weekly souks β have seen almost no tourist development.
Best Villages to Visit
- Smimou (35km east) β weekly Sunday souk; authentic Berber market with produce, livestock, craftwork. No tourist pressure.
- Ounagha (30km northeast) β a small village with a moussem (pilgrimage festival) in late summer; beautiful eucalyptus-lined approach road.
- Tidzi (40km south) β Haha heartland; small olive oil press opens to visitors, traditional guesthouse.
These villages are best visited with a local driver who speaks Tachelhit Berber or Darija. Your riad in Essaouira can usually arrange a half-day tour for 200β300 MAD.
Marrakech Day Trip (or Overnight)
Essaouira and Marrakech are 2.5h apart by road β close enough for a long day trip, better as an overnight. The two cities complement each other perfectly: Essaouira's breezy, laid-back Atlantic energy versus Marrakech's intense, sensory medina life.

| CTM Bus | 2h 45min | 80β100 MAD | 3 daily departures each way |

Day trip route: Depart Essaouira 7am β arrive Marrakech 9:30am β Djemaa el-Fna, Majorelle Garden, souks β depart Marrakech 5pm β arrive Essaouira 7:30pm. Tight but very doable.

Essaouira has no train station. The main options are:
