Chasing Light
Every hour has its magic. Plan each shot around Morocco's natural light calendar.
The 20 minutes just before sunrise and just after sunset (the "magic moment") deliver the most dramatic, even light with zero harsh shadows โ perfect for courtyard and alley shots.

Respect & Culture
Your camera is a guest in someone else's home. These guidelines ensure your presence enriches rather than intrudes.
Say "Mumkin tesawwer?" โ Moroccan Darija for "Can I take a photo?" A warm smile and a few words of Arabic go a long way. Respect a firm "la".
Offer 5โ20 MAD if someone poses for you. Agree beforehand to avoid misunderstandings. Never photograph and walk away.
Never photograph a woman without explicit verbal consent. Do not shoot through windows or doorways into private courtyards. Dignity first, always.
Non-Muslims cannot enter most mosques. Where photography is permitted, stay quiet and respectful. No flash near worshippers โ ever.
Always ask before photographing artisans and stalls. Many traders see their craft as intellectual property. Genuine interest opens many doors.
Seek explicit consent from parents or guardians. Never share children's images without permission. Refrain from photographing children in vulnerable situations.
Buy something before photographing in a market โ even a small spice bag. Commission a portrait if you want a formal shot. Leave more than you take.
Drones require a DGAC permit in Morocco. Flying over medinas, airports, military zones and royal palaces is strictly prohibited. Unauthorised drones are confiscated. Apply through the ANAC website before your trip.
Cultural Note: Morocco is a predominantly Muslim country. During Ramadan especially, be extra considerate โ eating, drinking, and photography near mosques during prayer calls requires additional sensitivity.
Post-Processing
Six signature edit styles matched to Morocco's landscapes, with Lightroom guidance for each.
Boost orange +25, warm shadows +15. Reduce highlights. Add slight vignette. Works perfectly in souks and riads.
Shift cyan-blue hues. Desaturate all except blues and aquas. Lift shadows. Signature Chefchaouen edit.
High contrast +30. Warm split tone (orange shadows, yellow highlights). Crush blacks. Ideal for dune shots.
Boost greens and yellows. Add teal shadow tint. Natural vibrancy. Perfect for cedar forest and valley shots.
Blue-teal water emphasis. Bright whites. Slight cool tone. Dehaze +20. Perfect for Essaouira and Oualidia.
Warm candlelight tones. Lift shadows +20 (avoid crushing detail). Reduce noise with Luminance 40. For lantern-lit alley shots.
All palettes are designed as starting points โ adjust to your specific lighting conditions and personal style.
