The Journey Overview

The Marrakech-to-Sahara journey is Morocco's most iconic road trip — roughly 560 km southeast over the High Atlas, through the Valley of Roses, past ancient kasbahs, and into the dunes of Erg Chebbi near Merzouga. Most travellers do it over 3 days/2 nights minimum, though 4–5 days lets you breathe.

Distance: ~560 km Marrakech → Merzouga
Best season: Oct–Nov and Mar–Apr (avoid July–August heat: 45°C+ in desert)
Budget: From €35/day (budget) to €150+/day (private driver, luxury camps)

Route Options

Option A — Classic Route (Most Popular)

3 days

Day 1: Marrakech → Aït Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Dades Gorge (overnight)

Day 2: Dades Gorge → Todra Gorge → Erfoud → Merzouga camel ride & overnight camp

Day 3: Merzouga sunrise → drive back to Marrakech (or fly Errachidia → Casablanca)

Best for: most travellers with limited time. Covers the headline sights without feeling rushed.

Option B — Slow Route via Draa Valley

4–5 days

Adds: Agdz & Draa Valley palmerie → Zagora → M'Hamid dunes → loop up to Merzouga

Why bother: Draa Valley is Morocco's longest river valley — 200 km of palmeries, adobe ksars, and virtually zero tourists. Zagora has a different dune character (smaller, sandier Erg Chegaga nearby).

Best for: repeat visitors, photographers, travellers wanting to avoid crowds.

Option C — One-Way, Fly Back

3 days + flight

Drive or take a private transfer from Marrakech to Merzouga, then fly Errachidia (ERH) → Casablanca or Marrakech with Royal Air Maroc. Flights ~1h, from ~€60 one-way.

Saves the 6-hour return drive. Best if your onward journey is Fes or Casa.

How to Get There

Option Time Cost Flexibility Best for
Private driver (guided) ~9–10h driving/day €180–280/day ★★★★★ Families, comfort seekers
Rent a car (self-drive) ~9h Marrakech→Merzouga €35–60/day + fuel ★★★★★ Independent travellers, road-trippers
Organised 3-day tour Fixed itinerary €120–200 all-in ★★☆☆☆ Solo travellers, budget conscious
CTM / Supratours bus ~11h to Errachidia ~€20–25 ★★☆☆☆ Ultra budget, flexible on time
Self-drive note: The main road (N9 over Tizi n'Tichka pass, then R703 via Kalâat M'Gouna) is paved throughout. No 4x4 required unless you go off-road into the dunes. In winter, Tizi n'Tichka (2,260 m) occasionally closes for snow — check road conditions November–February.

3-Day Itinerary (Classic Route)

Day 1 — Marrakech to Dades Gorge

Leave early (7–8am) to beat Marrakech traffic. Drive south on N9, climbing the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m) — stop at the summit for photos. Descent into Aït Ben Haddou (UNESCO, 2h visit — the ksar used in Gladiator, Game of Thrones). Lunch in Ouarzazate. Afternoon: continue east on R704 through the Valley of Roses (Kalâat M'Gouna) — in late April, 4,000 tonnes of roses are harvested here annually. Overnight in Dades Gorge — the "monkey fingers" rock formations glow at sunset. Book a terrace riad (€25–50/night).

Distance: ~320 km | Drive time: ~6–7h including stops

Day 2 — Gorges to the Dunes

Morning hike up the Dades Gorge valley (30–45 min, free). Drive east to Todra Gorge — 300 m limestone walls, 10 m wide at the base. Rock climbers come here from across Europe. Continue northeast to Erfoud (famous for trilobite fossils) then the final stretch south to Merzouga. Arrive 4–5pm. Meet your camel guide for a sunset camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes (1–1.5h). Overnight in a luxury or standard camp — Berber dinner, Gnawa music, stars.

Distance: ~230 km | Drive time: ~4–5h including stops

Day 3 — Sunrise & Return

Wake at 5:30am for the sunrise over the dunes (unmissable — the light turns the sand from orange to gold to white). Return to Merzouga for breakfast. Options: drive back via the same route (~9h), fly from Errachidia (ERH) with RAM (~1h), or extend towards Fes via the Middle Atlas (another 5h drive north).

Return drive: ~9h to Marrakech | Alternative: Errachidia → Marrakech flight ~€60–100

Where to Stay Along the Route

Aït Ben Haddou
Stay in the ksar itself — Riad Caravane or Dar Mouna. Atmospheric but pricey (€60–90). Most people day-trip from Ouarzazate.
Ouarzazate
Practical base. Berbère Palace for splurge (pool, hammam). Budget: Dar Kamar medina riad ~€35. Good last chance for ATMs and supermarkets.
Dades Gorge
Numerous small riads 5–10 km into the gorge. La Gazelle du Dades and Kasbah de la Vallée both excellent. Rates: €20–45.
Merzouga / Erg Chebbi
Sleep in the dunes at Luxury Camp Madu (€120 incl. dinner) or budget camp Bivouac Tiziri (€45). Book 2+ weeks ahead Oct–Apr.

Practical Tips

Fuel: Fill up in Ouarzazate and Erfoud. Between Kalâat M'Gouna and Merzouga, stations are scarce and may run dry.
Cash: Merzouga camp operators often don't accept cards. Withdraw €100–150 cash in Marrakech or Ouarzazate. ATMs in Merzouga village do exist but can be unreliable.
Photography: The dunes photograph best in the 30 minutes after sunrise and 45 minutes before sunset. Midday light is flat. Bring a lens cloth — fine dust gets everywhere.
July & August: Desert temperatures regularly exceed 45°C. Camel rides are suspended midday. If you must travel in summer, stay in a hotel with AC and plan activities before 9am and after 6pm.
